A Family Story

Some days find me on my computer wasting time. Shocking, I know.

Today, however, I was looking up some of my well-known family relations. It is super simple to do--thank you, technology!

Relative Finder uses my family tree information from Family Search to tell me who and what my relation is to famous people.

I have discovered that some of my closest relations are known for bad things.

Benedict Arnold? I did a research project on him in sixth grade. The one thing I remembered about that whole thing? His name became synonymous with treason. Well, he's my 4th cousin, 8 times removed. ...so distant, but still there.

Then there's John Hathorne. He's from the days of the good ol' Salem Witch Trials. In fact, he was the leading judge. He's my 1 cousin, 11 times removed.

...along those lines, two of my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-aunts (that's 10th great aunts) were accused and killed during those "trials."   Thank you, cousin! 😒

It's not all bad skeletons in my closest, though there are a lot. I tried to balance it out by seeing how many eagle scouts I'm related to...and they're all diiiiiiistant! Like 13th+ cousins, distant. Haha

Other fun ones: My 12th great-grandfather came across on the Mayflower, and my 1 cousin, 5 times removed has a town named after him in Ohio. (Ever heard of the western author Zane Grey? Zanesville, Ohio? Yeah, we're related. 😏)

If you ever find yourself indoors, looking for an adventure, you should see who all is hanging out in your family tree. It's kinda fun.

Oh, I've got some royals in there, too. But don't we all? You should find out!

Floating Lanterns

This past weekend (Wednesday-Sunday) has been crazy busy with so many wonderful things happening. I won't share the coolest parts with you--sorry--but I will share a little adventure. To give you an idea: my Saturday started off here, at the LDS Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City. After that, my roommate and I drove out to Tooele (Utah Motorsports Campus) to *see* the Lanterns Festival. We found out about it a month-ish ago, and tickets were $50 per person. (The ticket included one lantern kit, and materials to make s'mores.) Fifty dollars! Bahumbug. I'm too poor right now to fork over $50 bucks for a lantern that is going to float off in the sky. I think it'd be fun to be in the mix of things with a larger group of friends, but that's not in the budget right now. But Tooele. We just drove through Tooele not too long ago! It's pretty flat...I was sure we could find somewhere to watch the festival without having to actually pay to participate....

Silver Lake and Donut Falls

It was super hot down in the valley, and my roommate wanted to go do something. Woohoo! I am always up for an adventure! The question was, however, do we go to the salt flats or go up into the mountains? ...I was already really hot--ok, and it was only about 86 degrees outside, but it was hot --so I voted for the mountains. My roommate then voted for her favorite spot: Silver Lake. I was good with that decision because it is a high location--up by Brighton ski resort--and I just really wanted to see how the spring melt looked coming down the mountain. Y'see, as you wind your way through the mountains, more often than not, you drive along streams. It's particularly beautiful in the Alpine Loop down by Timpanogas. (I'm going to be taking that drive soon-ish, I hope.) I wanted to see how it looked in early spring. First Stop: Silver Lake   Well, the mountains haven't received the memo that it's spring--which I'm totally ok with! We got up to Silver Lake...
